Vancouver is a set of small cities.

Twenty two local areas, each built around a high street, a park and a school. This guide shows where they sit and what living in each one actually involves.

How the city is laid out

Vancouver divides into three broad pieces. The West Side runs from Kitsilano and West Point Grey along the water, south through Dunbar-Southlands, Arbutus Ridge, Kerrisdale and Shaughnessy, then east across the Cambie corridor through South Cambie, Oakridge, Riley Park and Marpole. It holds the city's most established houses and most of its new duplex construction.

The East Side begins around Main Street and Fraser Street and carries on to the city's eastern boundary, through Mount Pleasant, Strathcona, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Renfrew-Collingwood, Sunset, Victoria-Fraserview, Hastings-Sunrise and Killarney. Lots are often smaller, the housing is more mixed, and the value per square foot is lower.

The Downtown peninsula holds Downtown and the West End, which are almost entirely apartments, wrapped by the seawall and Stanley Park.

Almost every neighbourhood is organised around a high street. West 4th and Broadway for Kitsilano, West 41st for Kerrisdale, Dunbar Street for Dunbar, Main Street for Riley Park and Mount Pleasant, Commercial Drive for Grandview-Woodland. When buyers describe the life they want, they are usually describing a high street and the ten minute walk around it, so that is the unit this guide compares.

How to use this

Search by name, street or the thing you want nearby, or tap the filter chips. The map hides anything that does not match. Select a shape on the map, or a name in the list, to open that neighbourhood.

Each neighbourhood page links out to the City of Vancouver profiles, the Park Board park finder and a live map search for each category, so what you see is current rather than a list I typed once.
